UNDERGROUNDS (U-SET 0.3)

Sooner than I thought, I can release the Underground Set Pak (U-SET, for short)...  67

It includes 3 cover tiles, 2 bridges, 2 stations (in both classic and modern style) and 2 station exits to be placed on bridges (or streets).
There's only Pak 128 available at the moment, but a downscaled 64 version will follow if nobody volunteers to do.
An H-SET with style-matching bus stops is in project, too!

If you like this addon, have a try to Timothy's Underground trains, too!

Known problems:
- Some pixels glow in the dark... Not a big problem, since most of them are to be hidden by other tiles, but it has to be fixed in next releases.
- Perhaps 1px misalignment for bridges: to be verified.

Buttons are coded:

top left:
--> the object belongs to the U-SET

top right:
(St) --> Station, yellow
(Ct) --> Cover Tile, red
(Br) --> Bridge, green

bottom center:
name --> object name and style!

Yep! They're bridges! Only straight, for now, but when we'll have bridgest built tile-by-tile, they'll work as normal roads! Wink

Even if you don't want to play with the underground, here's one idea:

(Please note, the screenshot has NOT been photoshop'd. Also, for those that play with the new slope tool capabilities -- I'm finding that digging 'natural' slopes helps to eliminate the rogue walls that are mis-drawn... Smiley )

- H-SET will be a set of bus and tram stops (and possibly some other related objects...) having a style which matches with U-SET, both classic and modern. It will be named after the "H" (standing for Halt) symbol which will replace the "U"... Do you prefer another letter for stops, instead?

- Bridges are intended to be *real* road bridges, for cars, busses and trucks...

- Park, city and land are available in *tram* menu since they are coded as monorails... However, like showed here, you can dig even canals under monorails... And there shouldn't be any graphical problems with that, since the climbing tile is replaced by a flat one...

- I know, I forgot a complete list of the objects... here you are!
cover tile land --> coded as monorails, in tram menu
cover tile city
cover tile park
bridge road --> coded as road bridges, working, in road menu
bridge city
classic station --> coded as stations, in both rail and tram menus
modern station
classic road exit --> coded as bus stops, in road menu
modern road exit

- let me know if you need/desire other objects to be added in next releases! And if you would like other styles, too!

 I will try to make a 64-pak version sooner or later (maybe tomorrow), but if anybody else does it before me, that is just fine. I don't have much time, these days...

Here is a simple scaled-down U-SET. The night view might not be fantastic, but this version is certainly playable.
I haven't tested the original 128-version (mostly because I'm too lazy to download the main 128-pak), but in the 64-pak version there seems to be a pillar missing on every frontmost cover tile. If that is a pure 64-pak problem, somebody should tell me how to correct it...

As soon as anybody else has tested this 64-version, I'll put it onto the addons page.

I haven't tested the original 128-version (mostly because I'm too lazy to download the main 128-pak), but in the 64-pak version there seems to be a pillar missing on every frontmost cover tile. If that is a pure 64-pak problem, somebody should tell me how to correct it...

Unfortunately, it's not your fault
I had to remove the pillar to align the ground image to the very bottom of the tile... I had no choice Cry

A house can be built on it, if it would be the bottom of the map array (planqudrat_t::gib_kartenboden()) and the subway some kind of tunnel. I.e. a real "ground cover tile" which hides the normal ground. However, this would need some coding, maybe a new type of ground. While not impossible, I suggest this as an extension after the next stable version. If it is easy, I might try it sooner.

the underground set is great but there's a 'drawing mistake' that spoils the fun a bit. To explain this further i posted a screenshot.

Yes of course I did, I'm like everone else in Simutrans, I try everything that is released, as soon as it's releaed. I'll try and comment a bit more when I've tried them for a bit longer. At the moment I'm using the covered stations extensively.

Edit: Sorry I missed the first line. I gave a 5 in the vote at the top of this page, which I assumed was for the Underground Covers etc.

Here is a screenshot showing one of my cities with the tram lines completely covered. Before anyone says anything, I know I should have used the Village Stations instead of the standard ones.

OH [...] IT!!!!!! the screenshots arn't working again in the latest PAK64 88.2.1. I'll send it later.

Aren't you supposed to dig a trench for the lines, instead of getting these elevated cover tiles? Or did I minunderstand the whole concept?

Stormoog's right! This is the main point, but surely you can test them however you like Wink

That's strange....the pillars can't hide behind the slope....I was using 88.04.1..
Also....ONLY park can be worked....both city and land can't... hmm hmm

U-set is based on monorail, which has changed in 88.04.1, so likely new pak files are needed...

If you use the station cover tile, the gound can cover the station. But not the monorail, that will not work. Likely will not work in newer versions too, since this is another concept or ordering the tiles.

Errors like "No through station here" can occur for many reasons, it might be that you're trying to use the bus stop type "station" from the U-set for example, trying to build a bus stop on rail tracks will give this sort of error. Can you give more details of the exact situation that leads to the error message?

If you can use makeobj.

1. Download source zip.
2. Open "U_STATIONS.DAT" with text editor.
2. Change "Dims=1,1,4" to "Dims=1,1,2", and save dat file.
3. Repak using makeobj.

This will work.

I think I found all the bugs in this (usin 88.05 1.2.9c):
1. ground and city coveer tiles are ground level monorails.
2. stations can only be built on the very end of tracks and roads.
3. buildings can't be built on the park cover tile.

Other than that it's nice. How do you build a station in a tunnel?

Try downloading from the bit at the end of the message (at http://forum.simutrans.com/index.php/topic,1847.msg10135.html#msg10135).
For some reason (most likely an out of date link) the "U-SET.pak --> the complete pak" download doesn't work, however the "U_SET.pak (1262.58 KB - downloaded 322 times.)" one does (for me anyway).

nice, very nice.

the bridges built tile-by-tile feature will, when implemented, actually turn this froma  novalty into a killer.

at present the plain cover tiles are bordering on pointless, since nothing appears on them, you may as well leave them blank (and actually be able to see where the flipping trains actually are :-) ) with care the cover bridge works well (road over rail) the inability to route trams is annoying but parallel bridges handle that one.

only real annoyance is the stations all being terminals only. which given i can just use a normal bus stop on the bridge tile above isn't too bad.

hmm..

reckon i may have to have a go at a few bits for this myself...

If you really like playing with these cover tiles, you could download the sources (available above) and try to re-compile stations... The compatibility was broken a few version ago, when rotations were added... the images should continue to work, just work on the dat, recompile and... post here the updated version!!!! wink
(Personally, I've lost interest in this project so far, but I'll be glad if someone else could maintain it waiting for forthcoming REAL covertiles... I'll du something more when they'll be implemented...)

i'll have a play with this.. i like the idea of underground trains, though they cost the earth. but with a time line switched on once the trams are at capacity, and busses would cause more problems than they solve due to traffic density i try to add a few u/g lines. problematic at the mo, but i can get some graphics sorted then when the tile-tile thingy works the graphics are ready to recompile.

btw. what needs doing with these ones? specifically to remove the bit about them only being a terminal station? (everything else works, i think)
